Bio

Kyle Hughes joined the Mars Hill University men's soccer coaching staff as an assistant in June of 2020. He currently serves as the associate head coach after being named to the position on June 1, 2022.

In the spring of 2021, Hughes helped the MHU men’s soccer program to a 3-3-2 record and a South Atlantic Conference Tournament appearance during a COVID-19 shortened season.

During the fall 2021 season, Hughes helped guide the Lions to a 11-6-3 record and a South Atlantic Conference Tournament final runner-up finish. Hughes also help contribute to the success of freshmen forwards Kevonte Willoughby-Williams and Peter Plougmand as both combined for 20 goals and 12 assist. Willoughby-Williams would go on to receive Freshman of the Year and All-SAC Second Team honors, while Plougmand would also be named to the All-SAC Second Team.

Both senior captains of the MHU men’s soccer program, Sebastian Bertilsson and Jeppe Chirstensen, would also receive several honors in the fall 2021 season including All-SAC First Team. Bertilsson set career-highs in every category which was highlighted by his 12 goals and being named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association's (D2CCA) Men's Soccer All-Southeast Region Second Team. Christensen would receive the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American honor and was named the South Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Hughes came to Mar Hill University after spending five seasons at Spartanburg Methodist College where he compiled a 64-28-4 record.  He began his collegiate coaching career at SMC in 2015 as an assistant coach for two seasons. In 2017, Hughes went on to be named the head coach where he would lead the Pioneers for three seasons. During his tenure, Hughes led the Pioneers to the NJCAA Region 10 Conference Tournament in every season as well as a NJCAA Division 1 Southeast District appearance in 2018.

Prior to joining Spartanburg Methodist College, Hughes served as a staff coach for two years at Carolina Elite Soccer Academy (CESA) and United FC.

A native of Greenville, South Carolina, Hughes played collegiate soccer at Spartanburg Methodist College and North Greenville University. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Health from Southern New Hampshire University.

Hughes currently resides in Asheville, NC.
