Gregg Munn has established himself as one of NCAA Division II’s emerging program builders, transforming Mars Hill Men’s Soccer into one of the South Atlantic Conference’s most respected and nationally recognized programs through competitive success, academic excellence, leadership development, and institutional collaboration.

Entering his ninth season as Head Men’s Soccer Coach in 2026 after being hired in March 2018, Munn has built a championship culture founded on accountability, servant leadership, and the holistic development of student-athletes.

During his tenure, Mars Hill has experienced one of the most successful periods in modern program history. His teams have returned to the NCAA Tournament, earned a national ranking, advanced to a South Atlantic Conference Championship match, captured multiple conference and regional honors, produced the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year, Academic All-Americans, Scholar All-Americans, and numerous All-Conference selections, while consistently being recognized for excellence in the classroom and service to the community.

Through eight completed seasons, Munn has compiled a 51-52-28 overall record while building a program recognized for sustained competitive success both on and off the field.

The defining season of Munn’s tenure came in 2024 when the Lions finished 10-4-5 overall and 6-2-3 in South Atlantic Conference play, earning an at-large berth into the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship—the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012 and the first under his leadership. Having previously helped lead Mars Hill to NCAA Tournament appearances as a student-athlete in 2011 and 2012, Munn became the first individual in program history to both play for and coach an NCAA Tournament team at Mars Hill University.

The historic 2024 season elevated Mars Hill onto the national stage. The Lions placed six players on the All-South Atlantic Conference Team while Peter Plougmand authored one of the finest individual seasons in NCAA Division II history, totaling 25 goals, six assists, and 56 points. Plougmand earned South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, D2CCA Southeast Region Player of the Year, South Atlantic Conference Male Athlete of the Year, and ultimately the D2CCA Ron Lenz NCAA Division II National Player of the Year—the first national player of the year in Mars Hill Athletics history. He was also named United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American, while both Plougmand and Sam Bayly became the first United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Americans in program history. Plougmand and Nolan McMillen additionally earned CSC Academic All-America First Team recognition.

Following that breakthrough season, Munn guided the Lions to a second consecutive South Atlantic Conference Tournament appearance in 2025 despite competing against one of the region’s most challenging schedules. The program continued to produce All-Conference performers while demonstrating the resilience and consistency that have become hallmarks of his leadership.

The foundation for this success was established over several seasons. In 2022, Mars Hill climbed as high as No. 14 in the United Soccer Coaches National Rankings, marking the program’s first national ranking in more than a decade. The Lions advanced to the South Atlantic Conference Championship Match in 2021 for the first time in over ten years, and Munn’s leadership during the program’s turnaround earned him South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year honors.

Beyond wins and championships, Munn has built a program recognized for developing exceptional young men. His teams have earned five consecutive United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Awards while producing numerous CSC Academic All-Americans, Academic All-District selections, Scholar All-Americans, conference award winners, and departmental honorees. During the 2025-26 academic year, Mars Hill Men’s Soccer was recognized with Community Service Team of the Year, Most Supportive Team, and Moment of the Year at the university’s Lion Choice Awards, while a member of the program received the institution’s prestigious Man of the Year award. These accomplishments reflect a culture centered on servant leadership, academic excellence, and meaningful campus engagement.

Munn has also played a significant role in strengthening the broader mission of Mars Hill University Athletics. Following the success of the 2022 season, he was promoted to Director of Soccer, providing leadership and oversight for both the men’s and women’s soccer programs while continuing to serve as Head Men’s Soccer Coach. His leadership extends well beyond the soccer field through strategic collaboration with university leadership, enrollment initiatives, student development, and departmental planning.

From 2022 through 2025, Munn served a three-year appointment on the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Regional Advisory Committee, representing the South Atlantic Conference and helping evaluate teams for NCAA Championship selection. His service to the university has also included serving as Chair of the Men’s Faculty Athletics Committee, membership on the Mars Hill Experience Committee, participation in President Tony Floyd’s Leadership Cohort, and service on the International Education Steering Committee. Through these roles, he has helped strengthen the connection between athletics, academics, enrollment, and student success across campus.

Prior to arriving at Mars Hill, Munn spent four years with Charlotte Soccer Academy, progressing from Technical Director of Coaching to Director of Coaching while overseeing player and coach development across multiple age groups. During that time, he also served as an assistant coach with the Queens University of Charlotte women’s soccer program before accepting the head coaching position at Mars Hill in 2018.

In the summer of 2021, Munn joined Asheville City SC as an assistant coach during the club’s inaugural USL League Two season, further expanding his experience within the American soccer landscape.

A native of Falkirk, Scotland, Munn’s connection to Mars Hill University extends far beyond his coaching career. As a student-athlete from 2010-2013, he started 75 career matches and captained one of the most successful eras in program history. He helped lead the Lions to two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, including the 2012 South Atlantic Conference Championship, while earning First Team All-South Atlantic Conference, NCCSIA All-State First Team, Capital One Academic All-District, and South Atlantic Conference All-Tournament Team honors.

Before relocating to the United States, Munn played professionally with Stirling Albion Football Club and represented Scotland at the Under-18 international level. He also coached within the academies of Falkirk FC and Stirling Albion FC, establishing the foundation for a coaching career that has successfully spanned both Europe and the United States.

Munn graduated Magna Cum Laude from Mars Hill University with a degree in Physical Education and a concentration in Coaching. He also earned a Higher National Diploma in Sports Coaching with Development of Sport from Forth Valley College in Scotland. He holds the U.S. Soccer Senior A License, U.S. Soccer National Youth License, multiple Scottish Football Association coaching licenses, and the United Soccer Coaches Sports Performance Diploma.

Recognized for his energy, authenticity, and relational leadership style, Munn has built his career around developing championship cultures that prepare student-athletes for success long after graduation. His commitment to competitive excellence, academic achievement, servant leadership, and institutional collaboration continues to position his programs—and the universities he serves—for sustained success.

Munn and his wife, Stephanie, reside in the Asheville area with their children, Charlie and Aiden.
