MARS HILL, N.C. - Freshman Jesse Shelton prepares the NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Championships held March 8-9, 2024 at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.
"Jesse is dedicated to perfecting his craft. His hard work and dedication have already yielded great results in his first collegiate season," Head Coach Richard Clarke said. "Jesse holds the school record in both Indoor Shot Put and the Weight Throw. I'm excited to see how he progresses throughout outdoor season with Discus and the Hammer throw.
About his season, Shelton said, "The best throws happen when you're relaxed. You've got a lot of energy, you're amped up, but you're still loose and relaxed."
Over the eight indoor meets the team had this season, Shelton placed first in five, including a win in the shot put at the South Atlantic Conference Championship. His first place throw at the Bast-Creggar Multi Invitational of 17.40 meters placed him 16th in NCAA Division II, helping secure his spot in the Championship field.
Assistant throws coach, Jackie Shelton is impressed with Jesse's first indoor season. Coach Shelton said, "Jesse shows up every day and puts the work in. He understands there are no short cuts to achieve big goals."
Clarke added, "For now, we prepare for Nationals by cleaning up technique and gaining confidence as he tunes up for the big stage."
