WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (4-6-1, 1-5-1 SAC) was defeated by Wingate (7-2-3, 3-2-3 SAC) by a score of 2-1 Saturday afternoon on the road.
Wingate's Alicia Rubio Garcia opened the scoring in the 12th minute of play, netting her third of the season. The Bulldogs would go on to outshoot the Lions 11-3 in the first 45 minutes of play.
In the 57th minute, a penalty was called on the Lions. Sascha Larsen doubled the Wingate leading, potting her fourth of the campaign.
Mars Hill broke the shutout bid in the 70th minute as Zoie Steinkamp netted her second in as many games and her third of the season. With under two minutes remaining, a final shot off the foot of Carla Humera was saved by Katrine Thisgaard, stalling the Lions' bid to tie the game at two.
Wingate outshot Mars Hill 19-6 with Rubio Garcia and Yasmin Cowley each attempting four shots apiece. The Lions were led by Humera and Marianne Ross with two aside.
Thisgaard stopped three shots for the win while Camryn Miller made seven saves on the afternoon.
The Lions return to the pitch on Tuesday, October 11 when they take on Anderson. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
