Butler notches 1,000 career kills, Lions drop second of afternoon

AIKEN, S.C. - Rebecca Butler eclipsed the 1,000 career kills milestone in the Mars Hill volleyball four set loss to Augusta to conclude Day One of SAC/PBC Crossover play. They went 0-2 on the day.
Following a seven kill performance against USC Aiken earlier in the day, Butler's second kill of the first set notched the accomplishment for the senior from Bradenton, Florida. She finished the game with eight kills.
Falling behind two sets to zero, the Lions roared back to take the third, 25-16. Back-to-back kills from Butler and Maddie Spurgeon closed out the set. The Lions never lost the lead once they went up 11-10 in the middle of the frame.
Despite a valiant push in the fourth set, the Lions could not overcome Augusta's potent offense, led by McKenzey Beck's 13 kills and Natalia Gouveia's seven kills, her latter two ending the contest.
Dayanna Barbosa finished the contest with 10 kills, which was a team-high for the Lions. She added three block assists, a team-high along with Sally Anne Johnson.
Butler added 13 digs and two blocks. She ended the day with 15 kills.
Mars Hill falls to 4-12 on the season. Augusta improves to 11-8.
The Lions will wrap up the SAC/PBC Crossover action with matches against Lander at 12 p.m. and Georgia College at 4 p.m
