JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Mars Hill baseball team (14-36, 7-23 SAC) closed out the regular season on the road versus No. 15 Carson-Newman (35-15, 21-9 SAC), falling 2-1 in the three-game series.
Mars Hill took game two while the Eagles bookended the series with wins in games one and three.
GAME ONE: C-N 3, MHU 2
The Eagles escaped game one with a 3-2 win, plating the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
Tied at two and with the bases loaded, Frankie Delgado drew a walk to score Logan Floyd for the game-winning tally.
The Eagles led 2-0 after five, highlighted by Delgado's RBI single up the middle. In the top of the sixth, Max LaLime tied the contest with a two-run home run to left field.
The Lions outhit Carson-Newman, 5-3, with Peyton Starkey recording two hits on the day, which included a double.
GAME TWO: MHU 9, C-N 3
Mars Hill used a six-run eighth inning to lead them to the game two win.
Up 5-0 in the eighth, following a Terick Bumgarner RBI single with the bases loaded, Chapel Matson's double to right center cleared the bases, scoring three and putting the Lions up by eight.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles attempted to rally, but to no avail, just scoring three runs in the frame, highlighted by Ryan Bolton's two-run home run.
Walker Fox's solo home run in the top of the first opened the scoring. After scoreless second and third innings, Dawson Anderson doubled the Lions' lead with a RBI single through the left side, plating Max LaLime.
With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Carter Potts drew a walk, scoring Fox to put the Lions up by three.
Fox led all players with four hits and three runs scored. Anderson added three hits while Matson led all players with three RBI. Bumgarner, Matson, and Peyton Starkey each recorded two hits apiece on the day.
Dylan Vega threw the complete game victory, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits while striking out a season-high nine batters.
GAME THREE: C-N 13, MHU 1
Carson-Newman's offensive explosion in the bottom of the sixth clinched the series win as the Eagles scored 12 runs in the frame.
Ryan Bolton, in the sixth inning alone, collected five RBI with a a two-run single and later in the stanza, a bases clearing double, scoring three more, to put the Eagles up by 12 runs. Aiden Gibson also added two RBI in the sixth.
Ten of the Eagles' 14 hits came in the sixth inning.
Mars Hill trailed by one entering the top of the fifth. Jackson Jones forced a throwing error, allowing Peyton Starkey to tie the game.
Starkey, Walker Fox, and Dawson Anderson recorded the three Lions' hits on the day.
