Trafton scores five in defeat to Montevallo on road

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (1-1) suffered their first defeat of the 2019 campaign, falling to Montevallo (2-1) on the road by a score of 24-18 Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.

The Lions jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Zach Wright and Zac Carrigan, but the Falcons responded by scoring three straight.  Jake Trafton's first of the day knotted the game at three, but Montevallo would go on to score four of the next five goals in the first frame to head into the second quarter up 7-4.  Thomas Vaesen had a hat-trick in the period as well as two assists.

Mars Hill outscored the Falcons in the second, 6-5, with Trafton and Spencer Andrews scoring two apiece.  Carrigan and Parker Beaudry added tallies in the frame.  Mars Hill trailed by as many as four, but three straight goals cut the deficit to 10-9 before two Montevallo goals less than a minute apart reestablished the three-goal Falcons' advantage.  Andrews, with 28 seconds left in the half, scored his second of the frame to pull Mars Hill within two.

Montevallo opened the second half by scoring the first five goals, three from the stick of Vaesen.  Montevallo went up 17-10, but the Lions scored three of the final four goals in the frame to pull within five entering the final stanza.  Beaudry, Trafton, and a man-up goal from Tremain Hill were the Lions' tallies in the third.

Vaesen opened the scoring in the fourth to put the Falcons up 19-13, however, Mars Hill clawed their way back into the contest by scoring four straight to pull within two.  The teams traded goals, keeping the deficit at two until the 6:11 mark when a goal from Kordell Primus began an unanswered 4-0 run for the Falcons to close out the Lions' comeback bid, taking the game by a score of 24-18.

Vaesen led all players with 15 points (11g, 4a) in the contest.  Primus added five goals and three assists on the day for Montevallo.

Mars Hill's balanced scoring attack was led by Trafton's six points (5g, 1a).  Carrigan also added six points on the day (4g, 2a) followed by Andrews' four-goal performance.

Kyle Little was credited with the win, making six stops on the day.  Joel Borman was credited with the loss.

Mars Hill returns to action on Tuesday, February 19th at home with a contest against Roberts Wesleyan.  Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
