MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (0-1) fell to Belmont Abbey (1-0) in their season opener Saturday afternoon by a score of 14-6.
The Lions opened the scoring with two goals in the first 1:57 of the contest. Sam Arendt scored the first goal of the season for the Lions just 24 seconds in, assisted by Caleb Nelson. Just over 1:30 later, Cole Ross tucked in an unassisted shot to put the Lions up two. The Crusaders would also net two in the first quarter to tie the contest up heading into the second.
Following Nelson's first goal of the season, the Crusaders scored four straight to take a 6-3 lead with only 2:34 left in the half. Ross struck for his second of the game with 1:40 left in the half, but a late goal by the Crusaders reestablished the three-goal advantage after 30 minutes of play.
The Crusaders went on to outscore Mars Hill 7-2 in the second half en route to the 14-6 victory. Arendt scored both goals in the second half for Mars Hill, completing the hat-trick.
Ross led all players with four points (2g, 2a) while Arendt led the Lions with three goals. Nelson ended the day with a goal and an assist.
Shane Hecht made 13 saves in his season debut.
Mars Hill returns to action on Wednesday, February 5 when they host Montevallo inside Meares Stadium at 1 p.m.
