Shelton named SAC Athlete of the Meet; Lions place 6th at SAC Indoor Track & Field Championships
Jesse Shelton claims third straight shot put title; sets records en route to Athlete of the Meet honors.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's indoor track & field team placed sixth at the 2026 South Atlantic Conference Championships, the two-day event hosted at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Jesse Shelton set two MHU records, a new SAC Meet record, and was named the Field Athlete of the Meet.
Shelton won his third straight shot put title, breaking both the Mars Hill and SAC Championship Meet record with a distance of 18.60 meters. He currently ranks sixth in NCAA Division II with that mark.
He claimed his second event win in the weight throw, with a MHU record distance of 18.57 meters. He also won the event in 2025 (17.59 meters).
Mars Hill set an additional two school records.
Luke New, in the heptathlon, took third with 4,528 total points.
In the distance medley relay, the group of Brandon McNulty, Connor Cecil, Braxton Cummings, and DJ Chadwell finished fourth with a time of 10:28.51.
Sophomore distance runner Eli Taylor was also named the Men's Indoor Track & Field Elite 23 award winner, presented to the student-athlete with the top cumulative grade-point average (based on a minimum of 48 credit hours) in each of the league's 23 team championship sports.
The Lions ended the championships with 44 points.

The Lions open the outdoor schedule on Friday, March 20-Saturday, March 21 when they take part in the Montreat Open, hosted by Montreat College in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
