Women's Cross Country Looks to Continue Strong Season at SAC Championship
The women's portion of the SAC Championship begins at 9 a.m. Saturday
MARS HILL, N.C.- The Mars Hill women's cross country team looks to continue some late season momentum as the Lions compete at the South Atlantic Conference Championship at Wasioto Winds Golf Course in Pineville, Ky. on Saturday.
"The challenge for the women's team coming into this year was to find a way to replace the whole top five from last season, including the two fastest women in the history of our program" head coach Mike Owens explained. "That challenge has brought out the best in everyone and it's been one of the most rewarding seasons I've had here."
In their last race on October 9, five MHU runners finished with personal bests. Shelby Robinson finished as the top runner at the Royals XC Challenge and has been the top MHU runner in three of four meets this season. Dawn Radford led the Lions at the Bulldog Stampede on September 26 and has been the number two runner for much of the season. Savannah Hulbert has been the number three finisher for Mars Hill in each race.
"Shelby and Dawn are having their best seasons ever and Savannah is having another consistently strong year," Owens said.
The Lions have gotten some strong performances from a pair of sophomores. Andrea Wolfrey and Danielle Dunn have each dropped nearly two minutes off of their personal bests this season. In her first season of cross country at any level, Nyla Feeney has finished as the fourth Mars Hill runner in both meets she has competed in this season.
The women's race is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
