Johnson, Mattox Earn AstroTurf SAC Player of the Week Honors
Gilbert Johnson has been named the South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week while Carl Mattox is the Defensive Player of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C.- Mars Hill freshman wide receiver Gilbert Johnson and junior defensive back Carl Mattox have been named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, the league announced Monday. Both players earn the award for the first time this season.
Johnson caught three touchdowns and had 147 receiving yards in Mars Hill's win over Lenoir-Rhyne on Oct. 24. He caught eight passes to average 18.4 yards per catch, including a long of 39 yards. His biggest catch of the contest came with 1:35 left in the game as he hauled in a 16-yard reception to push the Lions to the 41-37 win. He also chipped in a 16-yard rush.
Mattox made 16 tackles and one tackle for loss in the win over the Bears. He posted 11 solo stops and his tackle for loss dropped the Bears back three yards.
Mars Hill hits the road on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. contest at Tusculum.
