Limestone defeats Women’s Basketball, 94-64
HICKORY, N.C. - Mars Hill lost its season opener to Limestone, 94-64, on Friday inside Shuford Gym. The game was the Lions' first in the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational.
The Saints opened the game on an 8-0 run, finished off by consecutive three-pointers from Stephanie Hayes and Maria Young. The Lions answered, cutting the deficit to four points (10-6) off a layup by Armeka Booker five minutes into the game, but Limestone closed the half outscoring Mars Hill 44-22. Booker had 10 first-half points to lead the Lions.
Limestone increased its advantage to 32 points (60-28) two minutes into the second half off a trey from Hayes. Mars Hill responded with a 15-3 spurt over the next four minutes. Consecutive buckets by Danielle Tucker, and a three by Tyler Carlson made the score 63-43, but the Lions would get no closer.
Hayes led all scorers with 22 points. Young and Lindsey Woody tallied 16 apiece. Lauren Pace had 11.
Tucker finished with a double-double (12 points, 13 rebounds). Booker and Taylor Deal each scored 10 points. Ansley Ricker chipped in nine and was three-of-four from distance. Carlson had seven points in the game, while Kristen Metcalf and Jackie Simon had six apiece.
Limestone shot 30-of-69 (43.5%) from the field and hit 18 three-pointers. Mars Hill hit 24-of-54 (44.4%) from the court and made six three-pointers.
Mars Hill will battle Pfeiffer on Saturday, Nov. 12, in the second game of the tournament. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
