Mars Hill earns first SAC win of season, downs UVA Wise

WISE, Va. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (5-14, 1-10 SAC) downed UVA Wise (13-10, 4-8 SAC) by a score of 66-57 Wednesday evening on the road.
Mars Hill led 15-9 after the first quarter as Jo Snow and Nia Vanzant led their respective squads with five points apiece. Both teams shot 25 percent from the floor, going 4-of-16. Snow and Janette Hanni each collected three rebounds in the first.
The Cavaliers would double up the Lions in the second quarter, 14-7, to carry a 23-22 lead into the half. Sable Burnside led UVA Wise with four points while Naja Ngongba led all players with five points in the stanza.
Snow and Hanni each netted 10 points apiece in the third quarter as the Lions shot 53 percent from the floor, outscoring UVA Wise 22-17. Ngongba led all players with four rebounds in the third.
Mirroring the third quarter, the Lions outscored the Cavaliers 22-17 to come away with their first South Atlantic Conference win of the season. Snow led all players with nine points while Ngongba pulled down another five rebounds. Caitlyn Ross led the Cavaliers with seven points and four assists in the quarter.
Vanzant led UVA Wise with 17 points followed by Burnside's 14 on the night. Ross netted 11 and picked up 11 assists for the double-double.
Mars Hill shot 32 percent on the night and hit 33 percent of their threes (9-of-27) en route to victory. Snow led all players with 24 points followed by Hanni's 17. Ngongba scored 11 and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the double-double.
The Lions return home on Saturday, February 4 when they host Lenoir-Rhyne. Tipoff inside Chambers Gymnasium is set for 2 p.m.
