ROCK HILL, S.C. - Mars Hill senior midfielder Alex Mullen has earned the 2014 South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for men's soccer, announced earlier today by the conference. Mullen earned the honor for his achievements in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the Conference's championship sports, and is voted on by the SAC's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee.
"This is a great award for Alex and well deserved," head coach Gary Hamel said. "He exemplifies the true meaning of a scholar-athlete and all the hard work that is required to succeed at this level. I'm proud of him."
A senior Athletic Training major with a 3.68 GPA, Mullen has been named to the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll for three consecutive years and has been named to the Dean's List at Mars Hill. As part of Mars Hill's Athletic Training education program, Mullen has worked with the softball, men's basketball and lacrosse teams.
Mullen capped his playing career with a team-leading 10 goals and four assists while earning All-SAC First Team and All-Tournament honors. In 2012, Mullen was the first player in team history to earn Daktronics All-America honors as he claimed a spot on the honorable mention team. He departs Mars Hill with 26 goals, 14 assists and 67 points in 63 career games played.
The Adelaide, Australia, native has been active in the greater Mars Hill community, volunteering and participating in American Red Cross Blood Drives and serving as a United Way "Day of Caring" participant. He also has mentored at local churches and volunteered at Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. On campus, Mullen is a student ambassador, member of the Athletic Training club and is the men's soccer representative in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Mars Hill has had three men's soccer student-athletes earn the SAC Scholar-Athlete award, as Daniel Waymont took home the prestigious honor in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Benj Bostic was the first Mars Hill men's soccer to win the award in 2002.
