Lions Place Fifth in Regionals
HICKORY, N.C.-- The Mars Hill women's track and field team placed fifth at the Southeast Regional Championships at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
Ginny Smith earned 20 points for Mars Hill, a team best at this year's meet. Smith earned All-Region honors by winning the 100 M Hurdles event with a time of 16.78. Smith placed fourth in the High Jump with a jump of five feet, one inch. She also placed fourth in the Triple Jump, and eighth in the 400 M Hurdles.
Jessica Viscusi broke the school record in the 800M with a time of 2:22.93, diving across the line to earn the finish. That time was good enough for fifth place in the region. Additionally, Viscusi earned All-Region honors for her performance in the Pole Vault.
Three Lions earned points for their performances in the 1000 M. Heidi Hooker finished fourth, while Anje Kidd and Danielle Metz placed sixth and seventh respectively. Hooker and Metz also placed sixth and seventh respectively in the 3000 M Steeplechase.
Jessica McEntyre's eighth place finish in the 100 M Dash was good enough to earn points for Mars Hill. McEntyre ran the 100M in a time of 13.40. McEntyre also finished fifth in the 200M Dash.
Meredith Mercer placed sixth in the 400 M Hurdles with a time of 1:12.86.
Kristen Trammel turned in the Lions top long-distance performance. Trammel turned in a seventh place finish in the 5000 M run.
"This was the greatest season I have ever been a part of in my 10 years of track and field," said assistant coach Brad Nagel. "I will never forget this day or these athletes who gave their all every day and it paid off in the long run."
The next event for the Lions will be the NC A&T Last Chance Meet on May 12 in Greensboro, N.C.
