MHU downs Anderson in weather-plagued contest
The Lions persevere past multiple lightning delays for second straight SAC win.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill football team (2-1, 2-0 SAC) defeated Anderson (3-1, 1-1 SAC) by a score of 21-14 Saturday afternoon inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
In a contest marred by lightning delays, totaling over 2:30, the Lions held on to improve their overall record over Anderson to 2-0.
Mars Hill struck once in each quarter, carrying a 14-0 lead into the half.
Jon Gullette hauled in a six-yard strike from JR Martin with 8:26 left in the first to put the Lions up seven. With 1:15 left in the half, a wide-open Ed Louis Jr. reined in a 54-yard bomb from Martin to double the Lions' lead.
The Lions racked up 216 yards of total offense in the first two quarters of play with Martin having 131 in the air. He added 31 yards on the ground. Louis Jr. led all players with six receptions for 102 yards and one score.
Anderson broke the shutout bid in the third as Jonathan Bowden caught a six-yard pass from Tyler Wesley to cut the Lions' lead in half.
In the fourth, Martin's three-yard scamper proved to be the game-winning score as the Lions went up 21-7 with 9:53 to play. A Hail Mary attempt from Anderson was broken up by Cherron Holt as the final horn sounded.
The Lions outgained Anderson 356-327 with the rushing advantage of 154-82. Martin ended the day with 202 yards in the air, 61 on the ground for 263 total yards. Louis Jr. led the Lions with 102 receiving yards and a score while Jon Gullette (56) and Rayvon Durant (39) combined for 97 yards on the ground.
Defensively, the Lions were led by Isaac Weaver with nine tackles. The defending South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week Sakarri Morrison added eight tackles, 1.5 for loss, and a pass breakup.
Mars Hill wraps up their four-game home slate taking on Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, September 27 at 1 p.m. inside Meares Stadium.
