Mars Hill closes season on road at Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill football team (5-6) was defeated by Wingate (9-2) by a score of 37-22 Saturday afternoon on the road.
The Bulldogs led 14-6 after the first quarter, both touchdowns scored off rushes from Xavier Pugh. The Lions lone score of the quarter was Javonte Sherman's 16-yard reception from JR Martin.
Wingate tacked on another 10 points in the second while Lon Teachey hit a 27-yard field goal for Mars Hill. The Bulldogs led 24-9 entering the half.
The teams matched each other's respective outputs in both the third and fourth quarters. In the third, Caleb Lominac caught a six-yard pass from Lukas Kachilo and, with under a minute to play in the contest, Sherman hauled in his second score of the game, a nine-yard pass from McKendrie Douglas.
Kachilo led the Lions with 206 yards through the air. Jon Gullette led the team with 60 yards rushing on 13 carries while Charlie Guinade led all players with nine receptions for 146 yards.
Defensively, Sakarri Morrison led the Lions with eight tackles followed by six apiece from Steven Reid and Nissi Mikulu.
