Lions roar to dominant Senior Day win over Highland Cavaliers
The 60-point output was the first since 2004; Lon Teachey ties school record with 52-yard field goal.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill football team (5-5, 4-4 SAC) defeated UVA Wise (1-7, 1-8 SAC) emphatically by a score of 60-19 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
The Lions ended the first quarter up 17-0 with both Javonte Sherman and Charlie Guinade catching touchdown strikes from JR Martin. Lon Teachey added a 19-yard field goal.
In the second quarter, Mars Hill outscored UVA Wise 26-6 to enter the half up 43-6. Guinade hauled in a career-high 92-yard touchdown from Martin for his second of the game.
As the buzzer sounded, Teachey converted on a 52-yard field goal attempt, tying the Mars Hill school record originally set back in 1974.
Mars Hill's defense remained stagnant in the third, shutting out the Highland Cavaliers once again, 10-0. Teachey hit his third field goal of the contest, a 32-yarder, while Jon Gullette scampered 70 yards for his second rushing touchdown on the afternoon.
To cap off the impressive offensive display, McKendrie Douglas, with less than four minutes to play, found a wide-open Ryder Bush-Ivanko for their first respective touchdowns as Lions on a 36-yard pass.
Mars Hill ended the contest with nearly 700 yards of total offense, throwing for 370 of the 683 yards. Martin went 18-of-30 for 334 yards and four touchdowns. He added 122 yards on the ground on 10 carries to end the day with 456 yards of total offense.
Gullette led all rushers with 132 yards and two scores while Guinade led all players with 134 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, the duo of Isaac Weaver and Steven Reid led the Lions with five tackles. William Marzolf added four tackles, leading the team with two for loss and two quarterback hurries.
The Lions 60-point outing was the first since 2004, defeating St. Augustine's by a score of 63-12.
Prior to kickoff, seniors Jackson Akins, Dalton Beck, Tyson Conner, Colby Green, Caleb Lominac, Sakarri Morrison, Daniel O'Leary, Sawyer Parker, Keenan Pierce, Steven Reid, and Lon Teachey, along with seniors of the spirit teams and band, were recognized for their contributions to their respective programs.
The Lions close out the regular season on the road versus Wingate on Saturday, November 15. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
