FLORENCE, S.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team (2-1-3) defeated Francis Marion (1-2-3) in a rematch of last season's NCAA First Round matchup by a score of 1-0 Wednesday evening.
Just six seconds into the game, the Lions launched their one and only shot of the contest. Charlie Drury, netting his first of the season, blasted the ball in from around 17-yards out, scoring the fastest goal in Mars Hill history.
The goal ranks third all-time in NCAA Division II, tied with Dave Allen of Florida Tech from Nov. 9, 1996 and second in SAC history (:05 by Bo Jurney, Catawba vs. Newberry, Oct. 1, 1998). The fastest time in NCAA Division II was :04 by Peter Kinney, St. Anselm vs. Saint Rose, Sept. 1998.
Francis Marion outshot Mars Hill 10-1 in the half with four shots on target, all stopped by Logan Cassel. In the second half, the Patriots attempted the only two shots of the final 45 minutes, neither on-target.
Cassel earned his first win and fourth shutout of the season.
The Lions return to the pitch on Sunday, September 28 when they face Emory & Henry. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
