MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team (3-1-4, 1-0-2 SAC) defeated Wingate (1-5, 1-1 SAC) by a score of 1-0 Wednesday night inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
The win marks the first Lions' triumph over Wingate since the 2013 campaign (Oct. 4; 3-2) and head coach Gregg Munn's 50th career victory.
Mars Hill held the 3-1 shot advantage heading into the half, but remained scoreless. Late in the contest, Charlie Drury dribbled down the left wing and fed a low cross along the goal line that was redirected in behind Quincy Gibbs off the right foot of Oskar Wisth.
The tally in the 82nd minute marked Wisth's first goal as a Lion.
A late push by Wingate was held off masterfully by the Lions' defense. Mars Hill allowed just five shot attempts all night, none reaching the target of Logan Cassel and the Lions' net, securing their fifth shutout of the season.
Wisth and Mathias Karhus Mjaavatn led all players with two shots apiece.
Mars Hill travels to Tusculum on Saturday, October 4 for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
