MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team (1-0-1) defeated Montevallo (0-1-1) by a score of 4-3 Saturday afternoon inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
Kai Stolp opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, netting his first of the season and second of his career. Just over 10 minutes later, Diego Fernandez headed home the loose ball off of Jens Haukeland's free kick that rang off the cross bar. Haukeland collected two assists in the half as Mars Hill led 2-0 after 45 minutes of play.
Montevallo responded in the second half, netting three straight goals in the span of 20 minutes. Dominic Kienzle scored back-to-back goals and assisted on Dakota Hart's go-ahead tally.
In the 76th minute, Stolp netted the equalizer, tapping home Oskar Wisth's goal line cross.
Mars Hill retook the lead in the 83rd minute as Josh Moore scored the game-winning goal inside the right post.
Fernandez and Stolp led the Lions with four shots apiece while Kienzle led Montevallo with five points (2g, 1a).
Zacharias Killemose, in 21 minutes of relief effort, earned his first win of his collegiate career.
The Lions return to Meares Stadium for game two of their five-game homestand on Tuesday, Sept. 9 when they face Lees-McRae. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
