Football Loses to No. 18 Carson-Newman
The Lions lost on the road at no. 18 Carson-Newman 48-20 in South Atlantic Conference football action Saturday afternoon at Burke-Tarr Stadium.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Lions lost on the road at no. 18 Carson-Newman 48-20 in South Atlantic Conference football action Saturday afternoon at Burke-Tarr Stadium. Mars Hill fell to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Eagles improved to 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in the conference.
Jamel Harbison led Mars Hill rushing for 165 yards on 33 carries and ran for two of the Lions' scores in the contest. Chris Trimmings led MHU receivers with four catches for 40 yards while Trent Miller was 15-23 for 205 yards and two interceptions. Jasper Mason led the Lions' defense with eight tackles followed by Trey Clark with seven stops. Drew Martin recorded two tackles and an interception return for 64 yards. Chris Reeder added an interception and five tackles.
De'Andre Thomas led the Eagles with 208 yards in the air and 104 yards on the ground. He rushed for two scores and passed for one. He was 9-17 with two interceptions. Andy Hibbett rushed for 191 yards on seven carries and three scores. TraShaun Ward caught three passes for 96 yards and one touchdown reception. Jerry Miclisse led the Eagle defense with eight tackles. Sha'heem Stupart followed with five tackles, a sack, two tackles-for-loss and a hurry.
On the second play of the game, Thomas found Ward on a 61-yard touchdown pass to give the Eagles a 7-0 advantage. Mars Hill answered with two scores to lead 14-7 after Harbison found the end zone scoring on a 17-yard scamper and from one-yard out. The scores were recorded at the 13:28 mark and the 3:59 mark in the first quarter.
The Eagles then scored 41 unanswered points to seal the win. C-N scored 14 points in the second quarter to take a 28-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.
After the Eagles scored 20 unanswered points in the third quarter, Andrew Bocci added the final score of the contest for the Lion on a one-yard rush as time expired to make the final tally 48-20 in favor of the hosts.
Mars Hill will host SAC rival Brevard in the Lions annual Homecoming game next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
