MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (29-15, 10-10 SAC) split with Wingate (24-18, 9-11 SAC) on Senior Day Saturday afternoon, defeating the Bulldogs in game one, but dropping game two.
GAME ONE: MHU 5, WU 1
A late scoring surge, along with another stellar starting effort Kamryn Akins, propelled the Lions to their 29th win of the season.
Mars Hill scored five unanswered runs from the third inning on, including three in the bottom of the sixth. Sadie Cecil's two-run home run in the bottom of the third was the catalyst for the run.
In the sixth, Jessica Senn, with Maia Sholter on base, ripped a ball over the right center field fence for a two-run home run, building the Lions' lead to three. Later in the frame, Leah Grimes scored off of Brooke Hanson's double to center.
Senn and Hanson led the team with two hits apiece while Cecil and Senn led all players with two RBI.
Akins struck out seven in the complete game win, allowing just one run on four hits. She earned her 15th win of the season, tying a Mars Hill single season record.
GAME TWO: WU 5, MHU 2
Despite a 2-0 lead after the first, the Lions allowed five runs off of Wingate bats, splitting the series.
A pair of RBI singles from Bri Weimer and Brooke Hanson put the Lions up 2-0 after one.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the second with RBI singles from Macie Tillman and Madison Dixon. In the third, the Bulldogs jumped ahead as Riley Griffin reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, allowing Kaylee Hobgood to score the go-ahead run.
Hobgood, in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded, was hit by an errant Lions' pitch, allowing the fourth run to score. A sacrifice fly later in the frame off the bat of Addy Higginbotham plated Dixon for Wingate's fifth run.
Leah Grimes led the Lions with two hits while Weimer, Hanson, Meghan Murphy, and Sadie Cecil each added one.
Prior to the start of the games, seniors Maddy Lowry, Maia Sholter, Camryn Sterling, Meghan Murphy, Jessica Senn, and Bri Weimer were recognized and celebrated for their contributions to the program.
Mars Hill closes out the regular season on the road on Saturday, April 25 when they face UVA Wise. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
