Mars Hill splits SAC opener versus Newberry

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (20-6, 1-1 SAC) split with Newberry (10-12, 1-1 SAC) Saturday afternoon in their South Atlantic Conference opener, taking game one, but falling in game two.
GAME ONE: MHU 14, NBY 4 - 6 Innings
A six-run sixth inning pushed the Lions past the Wolves in game one.
The game came to a close after Bri Weimer's three-run blast over the left center field wall. Weimer led all players with a career-high six RBI, going 3-for-4 from the plate with two home runs on the day.
Sadie Cecil also went 3-for-4, collecting three RBI off of her home run in the bottom of the fourth.
Brooke Hanson went 3-for-3 while Camryn Sterling and Daci Sarver each added two hits apiece.
Kamryn Akins moves to 9-1 on the year, allowing three earned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings. She struck out seven in the win.
GAME TWO: NBY 7, MHU 4
Brooke Hodges and Payton Little combined for six hits in the Wolves series evening win.
Newberry plated three in the second inning, going up 4-2 in the contest. A trio of RBI singles from Little, Haidyn Campbell, and Brooke Crosby allowed Wolves to pull ahead.
In the fourth, both Little and Campbell collected their second RBI apiece, extending the lead to 6-2.
After a scoreless fifth, Maia Sholter's two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth pulled Mars Hill within two. Responding, Samantha Clark reestablished the Wolves' three-run advantage with a RBI double to center.
Leah Grimes led the Lions with two hits while Sholter and Daci Sarver led the team with two RBI apiece.
The Lions return to the diamond on Thursday, March 19 when they face Emory & Henry. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Ponder Field.
