MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (19-5) swept Shaw (1-10) Monday afternoon on Ponder Field by scores of 1-0 and 15-0.
GAME ONE: MHU 1, SU 0
Kamryn Akins continued her dominant start to the season, tying a school record for most strikeouts in regulation with 15 on the day. She allowed just three hits in the contest.
Akins improves to 8-1 overall.
A pitching battle between Akins and Syhia Marks saw the Lions pull through in the bottom of the sixth. Sadie Cecil's RBI single to right center plated Bri Weimer for the game-winning run.
Cecil led all players with two hits while Weimer, Alexis Nanney, and Camryn Sterling each recorded hits.
GAME TWO: MHU 15, SU 0 - 5 Innings
The Lions' offense exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth to cement the sweep.
In the inning, both Sadie Cecil and Bri Weimer collected four RBI apiece. Cecil ended the game a single shy of the cycle with a game-high five RBI. Weimer amassed her four RBI off of two two-run home runs.
Riley Waters added two hits while Daci Sarver ended the game with two RBI.
Karly Gentry moves to 5-1 on the year, allowing two hits while striking out three.
The Lions open South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, March 14 when they face Newberry at home. First pitch at Ponder Field is set for 1 p.m.
