COLUMBUS/AMERICUS, Ga. - The Mars Hill softball team (7-3) split their four-game weekend series, picking up wins over Columbus State and Eckerd.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13
GAME ONE: MHU 5, CSU 2
The Lions kicked off the weekend with a 5-2 win over Columbus State, scoring all five runs in the first two innings of play.
Sara Rexrode opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the first. The Cougars answered with a two-run shot of their own.
In the second, with the bases loaded, Bri Weimer was hit by a pitch, allowing Maia Sholter to score the game-winning run. Sadie Cecil added a RBI single and, later in the frame, Rexrode's sacrifice fly capped the scoring, picking up her third RBI of the game.
Cecil led all players with two hits on the day. Kamryn Akins picked up the complete game win, allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out 12 on the day.
GAME TWO: MON 8, MHU 0 - 6 Innings
Montevallo held the Lions scoreless in game two of Friday's slate, defeating Mars Hill 8-0.
Becca Benton led all players with three RBI off two hits. Taylor Rogers led all players with three hits, adding two RBI.
Bri Weimer collected both Lions' hits in the contest.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14
GAME ONE: NSU 7, MHU 5
The Sharks scored six unanswered runs in the final two innings to steal their seventh win of the year.
Trailing 5-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, a two-run home run from Gianna Russo pulled Nova Southeastern within one. Later in the frame, Emily Garcia walked it off with a three-run blast.
After a scoreless first inning, Leah Grimes' RBI single opened the scoring in the top of the second. Tied at one entering the fifth, a double steal saw Sadie Cecil putting the Lions ahead for the second time. Sara Rexrode added a RBI single while later scoring, along with Sydney Hodges, off of a two-run double from Camryn Sterling.
Rexrode went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate followed by Hodges' perfect 3-for-3 day. Sterling led the team with two RBI.
GAME TWO: MHU 3, EC 2
The Lions capped off the weekend with a 4-2 win over Eckerd.
Heading into the bottom of the first, trailing 1-0, Sydney Hodges smashed a three-run home run to left. In the bottom of the third, she scored off a RBI single off the bat of Leah Grimes.
Grimes went 3-for-3 from the plate while Hodges led all players with three RBI.
Kamryn Akins earned her second win of the weekend, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out four in the complete game bid.
Mars Hill opens their home slate on Monday, February 16 when they host Lees-McRae at Ponder Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
