MHU ties school record in sweep of Johnson C. Smith

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (17-5) swept Johnson C. Smith (4-12) on Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE: MHU 23, JCSU 4 (5 Innings)
The Lions tied a program record scoring 23 runs in a single game.
The offensive onslaught began in the first as the Lions plated nine runs. Alexis Nanney, Bri Weimer, and Sadie Cecil each collected RBI singles.
In the second, Mars Hill put up five more runs, highlighted by RBI doubles from Daci Sarver and Brooke Hanson. An additional five runs were scored in the third, marked by Jessica Senn's bases clearing double, plating three runs.
Mars Hill capped off their scoring in the fourth, plating four with Riley Waters' two-run triple being the standout play of the frame.
Six Lions recorded two hits in the contest while Weimer led all players with four RBI. The trio of Waters, Senn, and Camryn Sterling collected three RBI apiece.
Pyper Vardy earned the win, allowing four runs on three hits in 5.0 innings, striking out four.
GAME TWO: MHU 7, JCSU 0
The Lions completed the sweep, shutting out the Bulls, 7-0.
Riley Waters led the team with three hits and three runs. Alexis Nanney and Meghan Murphy each added two hits apiece.
Kiersten Gosnell threw a scoreless complete game, allowing four hits and striking out three.
The Lions return home on Monday, March 9 when they face Shaw in non-conference action. First pitch at Ponder Field is set for 1 p.m.
