Viscusi Named SAC Scholar-Athlete
Mars Hill junior Jessica Viscusi has been named the inaugural SAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s track, league officials announced on Wednesday. The award recognizes excellence in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Mars Hill junior Jessica Viscusi has been named the inaugural SAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Women's Track, league officials announced on Wednesday. The award recognizes excellence in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
Viscusi, a Chemistry major from Bryson City, N.C. with a 3.82 GPA, has made the Dean's List and SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll the last two years. Viscusi is a Bonner Scholarship recipient, a Grayson Scholarship recipient and Marshbanks-Anderson Honor Scholarship recipient.
On campus, Viscusi is the secretary of the Chemistry Honor Club and a SAAC representative. Viscusi is active in the Mars Hill community, having volunteered at the Madison County food drive, Madison County Day of Service and Madison County backpack program. She has also volunteered as a counselor at the Asheville-Buncombe Community Crisis Ministry, Habitat for Humanity and has been a day camp volunteer at the Swain County Recreation Park.
Viscusi broke three school records during the outdoor season, setting the new mark in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:47 at the Beynon Catamount Classic. Viscusi also set the school record in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the Terrier Relays, finishing in 9:16. She was also a member of the Distance Medley relay team that broke a 10-year-old school record at the Terrier Relays on April 5.
At the Food Lion SAC Track and Field Championships on April 18-19, Viscusi won the women's 3000 meter steeplechase and finished in third place in the women's 800 meter and 1500 meter run. Viscusi won five races during the 2014 season and was named the SAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week on April 16.
During the 2013-14 indoor track season, Viscusi broke two school records and established five new personal records. Viscusi represented Mars Hill at the 2013 NCAA Division II Cross Country nationals and was and has been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic team.
Viscusi was honored as the Woman of the Year at the Mars Hill athletic awards ceremony on Tuesday. The award is presented to a student-athlete for their accomplishments on the field, in the classroom and in the greater Mars Hill community.
The SAC Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee selects the winner in each of the conference's 18 championship sports.
