Clerihew resigns as Men’s Soccer Coach
MARS HILL, N.C. - Ian Clerihew has resigned as the head men's soccer coach at Mars Hill College to accept the same position at Franklin Pierce University. A search for a replacement will begin immediately.
MHC Athletic Director David Riggins stated, "Ian Clerihew has done a great job of building a program which has competed well at the conference and national levels. We wish him well as he pursues this new opportunity. Ian will always be a part of the Lion athletic family."
Clerihew came to Mars Hill in 2009 and guided the program to a 35-19-6 record (.633) in his three seasons at the helm. He led the 2011 team to the first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in program history as Mars Hill advanced to the round of 16 and finished the season ranked 17th in the nation.
He led the Lions to runner-up finishes in both the 2009 and 2010 South Atlantic Conference Tournaments. The 2010 team was ranked 13th in the nation for a portion of the season, which marked the highest national ranking in program history. The squad also spent a portion of the season ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Southeast Region.
Clerihew coached eight players who earned All-SAC honors and the 2010 SAC Freshman of the Year. Four players garnered first-team honors in 2011. Clerihew also mentored six players (3 each in 2010 & 2011) who earned NSCAA All-Southeast Region honors.
Mars Hill College is a NCAA Division II institution and a member of the South Atlantic Conference. The league is comprised of schools in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
