No. 21 Men’s Soccer defeats Wingate, 1-0
Ferraro scores game-winner in 68th minute
MARS HILL, N.C. - Mars Hill's Felipe Ferraro scored his third goal of the season in the 69th minute to lead the 21st-ranked Lions (4-2, 1-0 SAC) to a 1-0 victory over Wingate (2-4, 0-1 SAC) on Saturday at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the Mars Hill attack broke the tie 24 minutes into the second period. Ferraro went through two defenders before beating Bulldog goalkeeper Peter Trask top shelf from eight yards out.
Wingate threatened to tie the match in the 88th minute. A shot by Tom Poole was blocked; the rebound went to Zach Muchuca, who put a shot on goal, but Mars Hill goalkeeper Zac Scott made one of his nine saves in the match to preserve the shutout.
Scott now has nine career shutouts which ranks second in school history behind Sean Merfeld's (2007-08) total of 10.75. Trask made six saves for the Bulldogs but was ejected in the 74th minute for a high kick. Wingate's Stephen Harris made one save over the final 17 minutes.
The Lions outshot the Bulldogs, 20-13, and held the edge in corner kicks, 7-1. Mars Hill travels to USC Aiken on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
