CENTRAL, S.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (1-5) defeated Southern Wesleyan (2-4) in extra innings, 8-5, Tuesday evening on the road.
The Lions, trailing 5-3 entering the eighth, tied the contest with patient at-bats. With the bases loaded, Chapel Matson drew a walk, scoring Alejandro Aguilar. Terick Bumgarner was then hit by a pitch, plating Julian Lewis for the tying run.
The duo of Matson and Bumgarner struck again in the 12th inning. Matson's RBI double scored Jake Modrak for the go-ahead run. To clear the bases, Bumgarner's two-run single to center put the Lions up by three.
Dustin Dunlap's dominant relief effort secured the Lions' first win of the season as he went four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six.
Entering the top of the third down 2-1, Peyton Starkey's two-run double to left center gave the Lions their first lead of the contest.
Bumgarner led all players with three RBI while Matson and Starkey added two apiece. Matson also led the team with two runs scored.
Mars Hill opens their home and South Atlantic Conference schedule on Friday, February 13 when they face Coker. First pitch at Henderson Field is set for 1 p.m.
