GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Mars Hill baseball team (19-18-1, 14-9-1 SAC) claimed the season series versus Tusculum (12-25, 6-18 SAC), taking down the Pioneers in games two and three.
GAME ONE: TU 9, MHU 3
Tusculum took game one by a score of 9-3, highlighted by big first and fourth innings.
After one, the Pioneers led 5-0 as Jack Gagen's two-run single opened the scoring. Capping off the offensive outburst in the frame was Nick Satterly's two-run home run.
Peyton Starkey, in the top of the third, broke the shutout bid with his first triple of the weekend, plating Terick Bumgarner. Yeriel Pastrana's sacrifice fly pulled Mars Hill within three.
In the fourth, Tusculum plated four more, highlighted by Landon Dockery's two-run single.
Gavyn Miller, in the top of the sixth, plated the Lions' final run of the contest with a single to center, scoring Mel Rubiera.
Dockery, Evan Goins, and Jake Smith led Tusculum with two hits apiece while Gagen led all players with three RBI.
The trio of Miller, Bumgarner, and Pastrana recorded two hits apiece for Mars Hill.
Aidan Sproles was credited with the win, striking out seven in 6.0 innings thrown. Aiden Tipton recorded his first save of the season.
GAME TWO: MHU 3, TU - 11 Innings
Gavyn Miller's RBI single in the top of the 11th split Friday's doubleheader.
The Lions trailed 2-0 heading into the top of the sixth. With Yeriel Pastrana on base, Chapel Matson blasted a two-run home run down the left field line to tie the game at two.
Matson and Peyton Starkey led the Lions with two hits each in the contest while Matson led all players with two RBI.
Brady Stephens won his third game of the year, striking out five in 3.2 innings, allowing just two hits. Jacob Davis, in the no decision, struck out nine in 7.0 innings, allowing just two runs on six hits.
GAME THREE: MHU 9, TU 2
A four-run seventh inning clinched the Lions' fifth South Atlantic Conference series win, downing Tusculum by a score of 9-2.
The Lions, already leading 4-1, extended their lead to six as Alejandro Aguilar smashed a three-run home run. Later in the inning, RBI singles from Zachary Cimino and Peyton Starkey put the Lions up by eight.
Starkey opened the scoring in the top of the third with a two-run triple, scoring Mel Rubiera and Dawson Anderson. Anderson collected RBI singles in both the fourth and sixth innings.
Aguilar and Starkey led all players with three RBI apiece while Starkey led all players with four hits. Cimino, Anderson, and Terick Bumgarner each added two hits.
Collin Chappel picked up his second win of the season, allowing two hits in 5.0 innings. Reid Withers struck out two in 3.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits. In one inning of relief work, Dustin Dunlap allowed one run on two hits.
The Lions return to the diamond in non-conference play on Tuesday, April 7 when they face Young Harris on the road. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
