BRISTOL, Tenn. - The Mars Hill baseball team (21-21-1) defeated King (12-31) by a score of 5-4 in 10 innings Wednesday afternoon on the road.
The Lions trailed 4-3 entering the top of the ninth. With runners on, Terick Bumgarner's RBI single tied the contest as Mel Rubiera scored, making the game 4-4.
In the top of the 10th, Gavyn Miller doubled down the right field line, plating Jack Davis for the game-winning run.
Bumgarner opened the scoring in the top of the third with a two-run triple to right center. In the bottom of the frame, King cut the lead in half off of Justin Smith's sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the fourth, with the bases loaded, Jose Ruiz tripled, clearing the bases and giving King their first lead of the contest.
Chapel Matson's solo home run in the top of the fifth pulled Mars Hill within one and was the catalyst for the Lions scoring three unanswered runs for the win.
Rubiera, Matson, Starkey, Bumgarner, and Davis each recorded two hits for the Lions while Bumgarner and Ruiz led their respective teams with three RBI aside.
Dustin Dunlap was credited with the win, striking out two in 1.1 innings thrown, allowing just two hits. Matt Pacheco earned his first save of the year, recording the final two outs of the contest.
The Lions return to South Atlantic Conference action on Friday, April 17 when they face Emory & Henry on the road. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
