Lions dominate Anderson for fifth win of season
Mars Hill opens season with 5-1 record for first time since 2010-11.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (5-1, 2-0 SAC) defeated Anderson (2-4, 0-2 SAC) by a score of 87-62 Saturday afternoon inside Chambers Gymnasium.
Tied at 16 after the opening 10 minutes, the Mars Hill offense exploded for 26 points in the second, holding Anderson to just eight. The Lions shot 58 percent from the floor with Aaliyah El leading the Lions with seven points and four rebounds. Naja Ngongba and Maddie Gillie each added six points apiece.
Mars Hill rolled their momentum through the half and into the third, outscoring Anderson 25-11. Tateyoina Harris led all players with 10 points while adding four rebounds. El added five points and created three turnovers.
Despite the Lions shooting 70 percent from the floor in the fourth, Anderson outscored Mars Hill 27-20. The large Mars Hill lead held true for the final 10 minutes of play. Amiya Porter led all players with four assists in the frame.
The Lions dominated the boards, pulling down 50 rebounds, including 18 offensive boards. Harris led all players with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. El added 14 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists for a well-rounded performance.
Ngongba ended the night going 7-of-10 from the floor with 15 points and seven rebounds. Both Gillie and Landyn Stewart added nine points on the day.
The Lions wrap up their four-game homestand on Tuesday, November 26 when they face Lincoln Memorial. Tipoff inside Chambers Gymnasium is set for 5:30 p.m.
