Mars Hill upsets No. 25 Carson-Newman
Lions win fifth straight as Daisy Gale nets career-high 21.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (13-6, 10-5 SAC) defeated No. 25 Carson-Newman (14-5, 11-4 SAC) by a score of 71-62 Wednesday night inside Chambers Gymnasium.
The Lions dictated play in the second half, outscoring Carson-Newman 39-28 in the final 20 minutes of play. Tateyoina Harris led the Lions with six points in the third quarter while Maddie Gillie added five. Gillie led the team with four rebounds in the frame.
In the fourth, the Lions went 6-of-10 from the floor and hit both three attempts. Daisy Gale led all players with 12 points, sinking all five free throw attempts. Gillie added another four points.
Mars Hill carried a five point advantage heading into the second quarter with Gillie and Aaliyah El each netting six points apiece. Harris led the team with four rebounds while El recorded both steals in the frame.
The Eagles were led by Campbell Penland in second quarter as she reeled off eight straight points to close out the half, putting the Eagles ahead by a score of 34-32. Lindsey Taylor added six points for the Eagles.
Gale led all players with 21 points followed by 20 from Gillie. Harris collected the double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. She added a game-high five blocks for a dominant defensive performance.
Mars Hill takes to the road on Wednesday, January 29 when they face Lincoln Memorial. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
