Lions cruise past Tusculum in penultimate home game
Mars Hill advances to 12-2 at home, the best record inside Chambers Gymnasium since 2010.
Mars Hill, N.C - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (15-11, 12-10 SAC) delivered a dominant 81-53 victory over Tusculum (8-17, 6-15 SAC) on Wednesday night inside Chambers Gymansium, fueled by a strong inside presence, defensive pressure, and efficient shooting.
The Lions controlled the boards, outrebounding Tusculum 51-16, while shooting an impressive 50.8% from the field. Aaliyah El led the way with a stellar all-around performance, recording 27 points, seven rebounds, and five steals on 10-of-14 shooting, while Tateyoina Harris was a force in the paint, tallying 20 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double. Maddie Gillie added 12 points and five rebounds, providing an additional offensive spark.
Mars Hill established control early, taking a 14-9 lead after the first quarter and extending it to 35-27 by halftime. Tusculum briefly closed the gap in the second quarter, but Mars Hill responded with a dominant 23-17 third quarter, pulling away for good. The Lions' defense was relentless, forcing 15 turnovers and converting them into 15 points, while also capitalizing on 14 second-chance points off their rebounding advantage.
Despite Ni'Kiah Chesterfield leading Tusculum with 19 points, four rebounds, and three blocks, the Pioneers struggled offensively, shooting just 38.9% from the field and 50% from the free-throw line.
With this statement win, Mars Hill improves to 12-2 at home, marking their best home record since the 2010-11 season. The Lions also clinched their first winning season since 2015-16.
The Lions look to defend their home court once again as they prepare to face Catawba on Saturday at home inside Chambers Gymnasium. Senior Day tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
