Mars Hill opens season on road at SAC/CC Challenge
CENTRAL, S.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (0-1) opened their regular season on the road at the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge, falling to Belmont Abbey (1-0) by a score of 72-60 Friday evening.
The Crusaders led by eight, 24-16, after the first 10 minutes of play, in large part to Leigha Dennison's 12-point quarter. Kindan Dawson led the Lions with six points, followed by three apiece from Felesia Ondongo and Jadein Haynes.
The second quarter saw each team match the other's output with 11 points. The Lions entered the half down 35-27.
In the third stanza, Belmont Abbey hit 43 percent of their shots as Kallie Lusk led all players with 10 points off the bench. Haynes led Mars Hill with seven of their 16 quarter points.
The Lions did outscore the Crusaders in the fourth, 17-15, but the large lead held for Belmont Abbey, securing their first win of the young season.
Haynes led the Lions with 12 points while the duo of Dawson and Adrianna Gullette each added 11 points. Makayla Street led the team with 10 rebounds and was one point shy of the double-double. Both Gullette and Ondongo each added three assists.
The Lions return to the court on Saturday, November 15 when they face the host team of the SAC/CC Challenge, Southern Wesleyan. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
