Mars Hill cruises past SWU for first win of season
Six Lions posted double-digit scoring efforts; head coach JJ Green wins first as Lions' leader.
CENTRAL, S.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-1) defeated Southern Wesleyan (0-2) by a score of 98-77 Saturday afternoon on the road as they conclude the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge.
The Lions' offense dominated the first quarter, scoring 35 points, going 14-of-21 from the floor. Felesia Ondongo went 5-for-5 from the floor, including three three-pointers to lead all players with 13 points.
Despite a lower scoring second quarter, the Lions still outscored Southern Wesleyan, 16-15, with Makayla Street's five points leading the way.
The Warriors responded in the third quarter, putting up a game-high 27 points. Adrianna Gullette netted seven of the Lions' 23 points, going 3-for-3 from the field. Closing out the contest strong, Mars Hill outscored Southern Wesleyan 24-19 in the fourth to secure their first win of the season.
The Lions shot nearly 50 percent from the floor with six players posting double-figures. Ondongo led the team with 18 points followed by 17 from Street. Shyann McCummings added 13 points while the duo of Gullette and Jadyiah Peoples each added 12 apiece.
To secure the double-double, Ondongo led the Lions with 10 rebounds while Peoples recorded six of the Lions' 20 steals in the contest. Gullette led the team with five assists.
With the win, head coach JJ Green earns his first at the helm of the Lions' program.
Mars Hill opens their home slate on Monday, November 17 when they host Clinton College. Tipoff inside Chambers Gymnasium is set for 5:30 p.m.
