Lions open SAC play downing undefeated Newberry
Mars Hill nets 26 in the fourth to blemish Wolves' perfect record.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (4-3, 1-0 SAC) defeated Newberry (6-1, 0-1 SAC) by a score of 70-65 in their South Atlantic Conference opener Wednesday night inside Chambers Gymnasium.
Mars Hill entered the fourth down by four, but dug deep and hit clutch free throws to come from behind and hand Newberry their first loss of the season. Jadein Haynes led all players with nine points, hitting all six free throw attempts to clinch the victory. Makayla Street added six points while Adrianna Gullette hit five free throws for five points.
The Lions led after the first 10 minutes, 15-9, holding the Wolves to just 20 percent shooting. Gullette led the Lions with four points followed by three from Stella McIntyre.
In the second, the Wolves outscored Mars Hill 21-20, heading into the half down 35-30. The duo of Leigha Harris and Rickell Brown each netted five points as the Wolves shot 50 percent from the floor. Street led all players with 10 points in the quarter.
The third quarter saw Newberry double up the Lions as once again, the duo of Harris and Brown led the way, scoring seven points apiece.
Street once again set a new career-high, leading all scorers with 21 points, adding eight rebounds. Gullette ended the night with 15 points and a team-high three assists.
The Lions take to the road on Saturday, December 6 when they face Anderson. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
