Volleyball Completes Season Sweep of Coker
Mars Hill swept Coker on Friday, winning by scores of 25-13, 25-23 and 25-22
MARS HILL, N.C. - Playing their first home game in three weeks, the Mars Hill volleyball team took advantage of their home court as the Lions swept Coker 3-0 in Stanford Arena on Friday night. Mars Hill won by scores of 25-13, 25-23 and 25-22 to complete the season sweep of the Cobras. The Lions improve to 5-13 overall and 3-8 in the South Atlantic Conference while Coker drops to 4-13 and 1-11.
Rebecca Butler posted a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs. Butler hit a season-best .520. Mary Kate Griffin had 13 kills and a match-high three service aces. Lauren Hochstetler led the Lions with 20 digs, followed by Victoria Kaiser with 13.
Madison Bingle led Coker with 12 kills. Missy Reid and Kara Overholt each had 14 digs. Christen Bragg had a pair of solo blocks.
The Lions started the match on an 8-2 run and enjoyed a 15-5 lead in the opening set. MHU hit .462 and led by as many as 13 (23-10) en route to a 25-13 opening set victory.
The Lions pulled ahead to an 11-8 lead in the second set before a Bingle kill evened the frame at 13. Coker would pull ahead 17-14 before the Lions went on a 4-0 run to reclaim the lead. The Cobras held a 21-20 lead before kills from Hochstetler and Butler gave the hosts a 23-21 advantage. Coker would tie the set at 23 before consecutive kills from Butler and Griffin gave Mars Hill a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Coker held a 15-10 lead in the third set following a Lion error before MHU went on a 4-0 run to pull within a point. The Cobras held a 18-15 advantage before a pair of Griffin kills and a Maddie Spurgeon kill evened the frame at 18. A Coker ball handling error with the set tied at 20 gave the lions a lead they wouldn't relinquish as the Lions held off a late Cobra rally for a match-clinching 25-22 victory.
Mars Hill hosts Wingate on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
