Bears Defeat Volleyball
Lenoir-Rhyne defeated Mars Hill 3-0 on Tuesday
MARS HILL, N.C.- Lenoir-Rhyne defeated the Mars Hill volleyball team 3-0 in a South Atlantic Conference match on Tuesday night in Stanford Arena. The Bears won by scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-17. L-R improves to 17-7 and 15-4 in the league while MHU drops to 6-19 and 4-14.
Lauren Hochstetler led Mars Hill with six kills, followed by Rebecca Butler with five kills. Victoria Kaiser had 13 digs to lead the Lions. Andie Russell handed out 11 assists.
Morgan Bunker had 12 kills to lead Lenoir-Rhyne, with Jillian Born leading the Bear defense with 17 digs. Jessica Funk had 17 assists, followed by Briana Gottberg with 15.
With the first set tied at 5, a Bunker kill began a 10-3 run for the Bears to take a 15-8 lead. Mars Hill would pull to within five, 16-11, but would get no closer than seven for the rest of the set.
Lenoir-Rhyne hit a match-best .450 to claim the second set. The Bears opened the set on a 4-0 run before MHU cut the deficit to two, 10-8, following an Elizabeth Kaeser error. Lenoir-Rhyne responded with an 11-2 run to put the set out of reach.
A Bunker kill broke a 6-all tie and began a 12-2 run for the visitors, giving L-R an 18-8 advantage. Mars Hill would pull to within six points, 20-14 before Lenoir-Rhyne scored three straight en route to a 25-17 third set victory.
Mars Hill hosts Brevard on Friday at 7 p.m.
