Volleyball Falls to Catawba
Catawba defeated Mars Hill 3-0, winning by scores of 26-24, 25-13 and 26-24
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team lost 3-0 to Catawba on Saturday afternoon in Stanford Arena in a South Atlantic Conference match. The Indians won by scores of 26-24, 25-13 and 26-24. Catawba improves to 13-12 and 10-8 in the league while Mars Hill falls to 6-18 and 4-13.
Rebecca Butler and Lauren Hochstetler each had 10 kills for the Lions, followed by Mary Kate Griffin with nine. Victoria Kaiser had 22 digs. Andie Russell had 32 assists and three service aces.
Alex Hopper led Catawba with 12 kills, followed by Erin Morant with nine. Evan Schultz had 15 digs, followed by McKenzie Garrison and Rachel Stanford with 11 each and Meredith Furr with 10.
The opening set featured 10 ties with the largest lead being three points. With the scored tied at 18, Catawba would enjoy a 20-18 lead before the Lions used a Hochstetler kill to tie the set at 21. Catawba led 24-23 and was serving for the set but a Hochstetler block evened the frame at 24. A pair of Bri Howard kills would end the set and give the Indians a 26-24 victory.
Catawba opened the second set on a 5-0 run and led 8-2 before the Lions went on a 6-2 run to pull within a pair (10-8) following a block by Butler and Griffin. Mars Hill would pull within three, 15-12, following an attack error before the Indians went on a 10-1 run to close out the set.
Mars Hill led the third set 5-2 following a Butler kill before the Indians took a 13-8 lead following a Morant kill. The Lions hung within three points before a bad set and Indian kill gave the visitors a 20-15 lead. Mars Hill battled back, using a pair of Griffin kills, two Rusell service aces and a Catawba error to tie the set at 20. Catawba led 24-22 before consecutive kills from Maddie Spurgeon and Elizabeth Kaeser tied the set at 24. The Indians would claim the match thanks to a Rachel Gallup kill and an MHU attack error.
Mars Hill hosts Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
