Volleyball Falls to Carson-Newman
Carson-Newman defeated Mars Hill 3-0 on Tuesday in Stanford Arena
MARS HILL, N.C.- The Mars Hill volleyball team lost 3-0 to Carson-Newman on Tuesday night in Stanford Arena. The Eagles won by scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 25-20. Carson-Newman improves to 18-3 and 12-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. Mars Hill falls to 5-15 and 3-10.
Rebecca Butler led the Lions with eight kills. Victoria Kaiser had 20 digs, followed by Lauren Hochstetler with 16 and Butler with 12. Sara Fahrenbrook had 20 assists. Hochstetler finished with three service aces, with two each from Fahrenbrook and Kaiser.
Maddie Borch finished with a match-high 13 kills for Carson-Newman, followed by Sara Fairley with 10 kills. Taylor Lowe led the visitors with 18 digs, followed by Megan Morris with 12 and 10 each from Fairley and Anna Patton.
After an MHU attack error gave Carson-Newman an 11-6 lead in the first set, Mars Hill used a Hochstetler kill to even the slate at 12. Carson-Newman broke a 13-all tie with a 3-0 run and led 19-16 before Mars Hill used a 4-1 run capped by a Hochstetler ace to tie the set at 20. A Butler kill tied the set at 22 but the Eagles claimed the opening frame following kills from Borch, Cecily Clark and a MHU error.
Carson-Newman held a 10-6 lead in the second set before the Lions pulled to within one, 14-13, thanks to a Mary Kate Griffin ace. Mars Hill would hang within two and three points as the teams traded scores before Carson-Newman went on a 4-0 run for a 23-19 lead. Mars Hill would battle back and tie the set at 24 following a pair of Eagle errors. A Borch kill followed by a Natalie Harris block gave the visitors a 26-24 edge in the second set.
The Eagles would enjoy a 4-1 lead in the third stanza before the Lions went on a 4-0 run thanks to a pair of Butler kills and Fahrenbrook service aces for a 5-4 lead. The Lions would lead 11-9 following an Elizabeth Kaeser kill before the Eagles went on a 10-0 run to take control of the set. Mars Hill would get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
Mars Hill travels to Anderson on Friday, facing the Trojans at 7 p.m.
