Lions roar to 2-0 start to open season
MHU defeats Southern Wesleyan 96-87 in second game in as many days.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's basketball team (2-0) defeated Southern Wesleyan (0-2) by a score of 96-87 Saturday afternoon inside Chambers Gymnasium.
The Lions' explosive start in the first half saw them carry a six-point advantage into the half, 43-37. The team shot 50 percent from the floor with Jaheim Taylor's nine points leading the way. Christian Foy added eight points, hitting two threes in the half. Alejandro Ford led all players with four assists while adding three rebounds. Ashton Troutman led the team with four rebounds in the half.
In the second, both offenses were clicking as the Warriors hit 56 percent of their shots while the Lions hit 67 percent, going 18-of-27 from the floor. Taylor and Foy led the way with nine points apiece while Troutman and Keenan Wilkins each added seven.
Jaylen Bates, in his season debut, picked up five points and three assists in just eight second half minutes.
Taylor led all players with 18 points followed by 17 from Foy. Bates went a perfect 4-for-4 on the night for 10 points while leading the team with six assists. Troutman led the Lions with seven rebounds.
Mars Hill continues their homestand on Monday, November 17 when they host Clinton College. Tipoff inside Chambers Gymnasium is set for 7:30 p.m.
