Lions split season series with Newberry
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (9-11, 6-9 SAC) defeated Newberry (10-12, 5-10 SAC) in straight sets Tuesday evening inside Chambers Gymnasium.
Mars Hill rolled through the first set, hitting a team-high .243 with 15 kills on 37 attempts. The second frame saw the Lions pull away late, taking advantage of Newberry's nine errors.
With a 10-point advantage in the third set, the Lions clung on to the set as the Wolves claimed nine straight points to pull within one, 24-23. Mars Hill remained resilient, and was able to find the final kill of the match and win their second straight.
Ioana Poenaru led the team with 10 kills while the duo of Selma Vassdal and Angel Jimenez each added nine kills apiece. Both Vassdal and Laela Jimenez led all players with four service aces apiece.
Poenaru picked up the double-double by adding a team-high 17 digs. Mackenzie Schmucker also collected a double-double with 14 assists and 10 digs. Alyssa Kornegay led all players with 24 assists.
Mars Hill faces Southern Wesleyan on Friday, November 7 in their final non-conference match of the year. First serve inside Chambers Gymnasium is set for 6 p.m.
