Lions drop spirited contest against No. 20 Wingate
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (7-9, 4-7 SAC) was defeated in straight sets versus No. 20 Wingate (20-1, 13-0 SAC) Friday evening.
Mars Hill held a 20-18 advantage late in the first, but the Bulldogs rallied for seven straight points following a timeout to clinch the first frame.
Another late comeback in the second, seeing them take seven of eight points towards the latter portion of the frame, allowed the Bulldogs to go up 2-0.
They clinched the match with a match-high 17 kills in the third to win their 20th of the campaign.
The Lions were led offensively by Ioana Poenaru and Selma Vassdal, with nine and eight kills respectively. Brooke Hoffman added seven.
Defensively, the Lions were led by Laela Jimenez's 18 digs followed by 12 from Angel Jimenez. Alyssa Kornegay led the team with 27 assists, adding 11 digs for the double-double, and chipping in three kills.
Mars Hill returns to the court on Saturday, October 25 when they face UVA Wise. First serve on the road is set for 3 p.m.
