Mars Hill falls to Tusculum in five
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (5-6, 2-4 SAC) was defeated by Tusculum (6-7, 4-3 SAC) in five sets on the road Tuesday night.
The Lions took the even sets, both by identical scores of 25-21, forcing a fifth and deciding set. The Pioneers, to secure the win, forced the Lions into six errors as Mars Hill hit .000 in the final frame while Tusculum knocked down nine kills on 32 swings with three errors, hitting .188.
Despite Mars Hill outhitting Tusculum in the first set .244-.238, the Pioneers eeked out the first set, 25-22. Both teams had 18 kills and four errors in the third, but Tusculum's match-high .298 hitting percentage led them to taking the third set, 26-24, going up 2-1 in the match.
Grace VanZweiten led the Pioneers with 18 kills followed by 16 from Karris Oller. Taylor Sanders led the team with 24 digs while Victoria Church led all players with 53 assists, adding 21 digs for the double-double.
Ioana Poenaru led Mars Hill with 18 kills and 22 digs for the double-double. Keira Links added 12 kills while Angel Jimenez followed with 11 on the night.
The trio of Laela Jimenez (28 digs, 10 assists), Mackenzie Schmucker (15 assists, 12 digs), and Alyssa Kornegay (27 assists, 11 digs) each recorded double-doubles.
The Lions return home on Friday, October 11 when they host Coker. First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside Chambers Gymnasium.
