Smith Named SAC Player of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Mars Hill College's Rusty Smith has been named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week and Catawba College's Austin Moyer earned league Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending February 21, announced conference officials Tuesday.
Smith, a senior outfielder from Leesburg, Va. (Frederick C.C.), led Mars Hill to a pair of SAC wins at No. 29 Wingate last weekend. In a non-conferece game against Tusculum, he was 4-for-6 at the plate with three doubles, a home run, and two RBI. For the week he hit .524 with 11 hits, nine runs scored, three doubles, a home run and three RBI. He recorded a .810 slugging percentage and a .583 on-base percentage. Defensively, Smith had eight put-outs and one assist from the outfield while not committing an error.
Moyer, a junior from Greensboro, N.C. (USC Upstate) tossed a two-hit shutout to complete Catawba's three-game sweep of Lincoln Memorial over the weekend. He walked two and fanned four to improve to 2-0 on the year. In the opening two games of the series, Moyer went 3-for-6 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored. In three appearances on the mound this season, Moyer has allowed just nine hits over 14 innings with a dozen strikeouts and a 3.21 ERA.
