Baseball wins weekend series against Newberry
MARS HILL, N.C. - Mars Hill took two of three games from Newberry over the weekend after both teams split a doubleheader on Saturday at Henderson Field. The Wolves (12-9, 6-3 SAC) won the first game, 18-6, but lost the second 11-9. The Lions are 10-12, 4-5 in the league.
Newberry jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first five innings of game one. Evan Darr and Sanchez Gartman each had two-run homers. Chris Love and Zach Morgan each had three RBI.
Coty Pate and Ben Hunt each posted two RBI for Mars Hill. Pate was also 3-of-5 at the plate. Evan Holton was 2-of-3 in the game.
Cole Robinson improved to 3-2 after throwing seven innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits. Jon Bullington falls to 1-4 after giving up nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits in three innings.
In game two, the Wolves put together a 7-1 advantage through the top of the third inning. Love homered to center field in the first inning to get Newberry on the board.
Mars Hill responded with 10 unanswered runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to seize control of the contest. Trailing 7-5 in the fourth, Rusty Smith belted a three-run shot to left center to give the Lions the upper hand for good.
Adam Lewis provided Mars Hill some insurance after he cranked a three-run homerun in the fifth over the right field fence. Love hit a two-run single in the sixth to cut the deficit to two runs, but the Wolves could get no closer.
Tyler Reboulet was 3-of-4 at the plate for the Lions with four runs scored. Lewis was 2-of-3 with three runs scored. Smith was 1-of-3 with four RBI.
Love was 3-of-4 with four RBI.
Greg Smith improved to 1-1 with a complete game performance. He allowed nine earned runs on 13 hits.
Chaunce Mattei fell to 2-2 with the loss. He gave up three runs, two earned, on two hits in one inning of relief.
Mars Hill will travel to Pfeiffer on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. ET.
