Baseball Beats Newberry in Last At-Bat
Adam Lewis hits game winning double
MARS HILL, N.C. - Adam Lewis hit a double off the center field fence to drive in Michael Bueker and propel Mars Hill over Newberry, 6-5 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Henderson Field. MHC improved to 9-11 overall and 3-4 in the SAC while the Wolves fell to 11-8 on the season and 5-2 in the league.
Mars Hill scored in their first at-bat when Tyler Reboulet plated Michael Bueker on a sacrifice fly to center field. Hunter Cox hit a sacrifice fly of his own to tie the game at 1-all after Chris Love scored on the play. MHC took a 2-1 advantage in the bottom half of the inning when Michael Brittian hit a solo homerun to center.
Andy Vogel tied the contest for the Wolves in the third frame when he left the yard to make the score 2-2. With two outs in the bottom of the third inning Reboulet scored on a wild pitch to give the Lions a 3-2 lead. After holding the Wolves scoreless in the top half of the fourth inning, Matt Harris extended the Lions' lead to 4-2 when he hit a solo homerun to left-center field.
Newberry tied the game in the fifth inning scoring two unearned runs on one hit and three Lion errors. Newberry loaded the bases in the sixth inning with no outs but reliever Tony Hearrell was able to strike out two Newberry batters and get a fly out to center to end the at-bat.
In the seventh inning, Ben Hunt hit a single over the head of Newberry's second baseman to give the Lions a 5-4 advantage after Coty Pate scored from second base. Kevin Rufus tied the game in the eighth inning at 5-all. He reached on a single through the right side and then advanced to second on a stolen base. The throw got past Bueker after contact was made on the play and Rufus advanced to third. A sacrifice fly by Andy Vogel sent Rufus home.
Bueker started the bottom half of the ninth inning off reaching base on an infield single. Reboulet successfully moved Bueker into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt that set up Lewis' game winning RBI double.
Bueker led MHC at the plate going 3-5 with two runs scored. Harris had two hits including a homerun. Charles Anthony picked up the win (1-1) throwing the final 1.1 innings.
Matt Mege took the loss (2-2) for the Wolves. Evan Darr and Chris Love led Newberry at the plate with two hits apiece.
The teams will conclude the three-game set tomorrow with a
double-header beginning at noon.
